Respiratory Disease

There are two main common but serious lung diseases which we manage at the surgery.

Asthma

Asthma affects people of all ages and can range from very occasional mild attacks, to frequent and very severe attacks which can be life threatening.

In the vast majority of cases, asthma can be very well controlled but this is often reliant on regular review and sticking closely to treatment.

All patients with asthma are annually invited to see Sister Tinham our respiratory nurse. At the appointment she reviews all medications and side effects and can increase or decrease them appropriately. Asthma treatment is constantly evolving so it is important to attend reviews even if your asthma seems to be well controlled.

The Asthma UK website is an excellent resource for people who have or care for somebody who has asthma.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (Emphysema)

COPD, like asthma is a long term condition which varies in severity. Regular reviews are an important part of managing COPD and we strongly recommend that patients attend annual reviews with Sister Tinham. Similarly to asthma, treatments are continuously evolving and so patients should attend even if their disease seems to be well controlled.
